The boulder walk is a pile of boulders and rock in a very exposed location. Yet this is an oddly fascinating Nelson city short walk. The Boulder Spit is a rare natural barrier protecting Nelson Port. Walk along an inlet with giant boulders, driftwood and stones stretching 13 km into the sea. There is an automated lighthouse on the Boulder Spit.
BOULDER BANK, SPIT, A NATURAL HARBOUR BARRIER NELSON CITY WALK
Perhaps a giant arranged the large boulders in a precise line reaching 13km into the sea forming an inlet. It is extraordinary that there are very few places in the world where the sea, tides, wind and nature create natural harbour barriers.
The area is very exposed and strong footwear is required to walk on uneven ground. The area is rich in human history with camping and stone tools being manufactured for hundreds of years. You have excellent views of Nelson and the Tasman hills. And there is a lighthouse now, automated offering spectacular views of the city and hills. The lighthouse is opened for visitors on an authorised guided tour of the harbour and Boulder Spit.
The track goes from Boulder Bank Drive to ‘The Cut’.
The walk is approximately 2 hours (one way) and on uneven rocky ground. There is not a distinct track to follow. You’ll be making your way on top and over large boulders. The Boulder Bank is rough, dry and very exposed, so be prepared for all kinds of weather and wear strong shoes.
The Boulder Bank Lighthouse has protected the port of Nelson Tasman since the 1860’s and is open to visitors on guided tours.
