Where is the best place to start the Centre of New Zealand, Nelson city walk?
Nelson Visitor Centre following the Maitai River walkway on Bridge Street to the Botanical Reserve.
The official start of the walk is the Botanical Reserve.
The Botanical Reserve is reached over a footbridge from the end of Hardy Street. You can park your car on Hardy Street East. The short walk has an interpretive panel at the bottom of the hill describing the views of Nelson over the last century, and the history of the ‘Village Green’.
Toilets are located on Milton Road as you enter the Botanical Reserve Park.

The ‘centre’ was the location surveyors (1870’s) used as a focal point.
SO WHERE IS THE CENTRE OF NEW ZEALAND?
In 1962 the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research conducted a gravity survey that took in Stewart Island, the North and South Islands, and the smaller inshore islands, but not the Chathams. This survey located the centre of New Zealand at 41deg. 30min S., 172deg. 50min E., which is a point in the Spooners Range in the Golden Downs Forest.
