Tahunanui Beach – Nelson City

Nelson, South Island

It’s ridiculously easy to find an awesome beach as you arrive at Nelson airport. Next door to the landing planes is Tahunanui beach. Nelson’s family favourite spot for the locals to hang out.

Tahunanui beach has over 1.7 km of white sands and gentle waves. The beach is safe for swimming and popular with walkers, joggers and sun-seekers, with the back beach for kite-boarders and dog walking. 

 

Low tide exposes rock pools with crabs, sea-snails a prime site for kids to explore marine life. Look out for a wharf where fishing buffs cast their lines in hopes of snapper, kahawai and blue code.

Year round Tasman Bay offers sightings of dolphins and orca feeding in the ebb and flow of the tide. The beach has its own business hub Tahunanui, Nelson New Zealand – Tahunanui, Nelson New Zealand lobbying for the beach, reserve and community.

Don’t worry you do not need to pick a favourite beach. There is plenty of space to go around at the Abel Tasman National Park beaches and Nelson beaches beyond the National Park. In fact our editor is mulling over the idea, the best beach is the one we visited yesterday with tomorrow a promise of another gem in the Nelson best beach category.
