FAIRFIELD PARK is characterised by sweeping lawns, playground and large trees. A rotunda overlooks a natural amphitheatre. The seven acre park is where summer concerts are often held. Relax in the Lady Newman Gazebo and wonder about the former cemetery now known as Fairfield Park.
FAIRFIELD HOUSE & GARDEN, NELSON LOCATION
Fairfield Park was once the Trafalgar Street cemetery, operating from 1851-1909. Look carefully among the mature trees for the faded grave headstones.
FAIRFIELD HOUSE is a beautiful heritage house saved at the 11th hour from demolition. The Victorian homestead was built by prominent lawyer Arthur Atkinson and his wife Jane. Their home was a meeting point for the Unitarians and suffragettes.
From the 1920’s the house became a boarding establishment for secondary schools then … a steady deterioration in the house’s fortunes. In stepped Friends of Old Fairfield (FOOF), and Alan Stantion and the house is now a premier heritage event centre nestled in the 7 acres of woodland garden.
