CHURCH HILL GARDENS NELSON CITY PLACES TO VISIT
Church Hill gardens have a prime location at the top of Trafalgar Street. Church Hill (Pikimai) with its Cathedral has a petite Victorian style garden. Mature trees offer shady places to relax and take in the city views. A perfect spot for garden lovers to chill out amidst the action of Nelson’s main thoroughfare, Trafalgar street.
CHURCH HILL GARDEN & CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL NELSON LOCATION
- Church Hill Gardens, Piki Mai surround Christ Church Cathedral (Anglican) with a range of exotic trees and planting. The Provincial Government funded the initial purchase of trees and benefactors have contributed to the woodland features
- Sequoias are found throughout the garden
- Phoenix palms, a favourite of English style public gardens flanks the granite Cawthron steps leading down to Trafalgar St. The palms were planted in the 1940’s
- Look for English oaks with underplantings of camellias and rhododendrons thriving in the cool shaded conditions.
- There are information plaques describing the story of the garden, the place’s role in pre-European Maori and distinctive plantings to look out for.

Church Hill Garden is part of the THREE GARDENS WALK Nelson city trail. The walk finishes in the Queens Garden so you can enjoy the nearby Suter Art Gallery and cafes.
