Walk Along the Kaiapoi River

A shared pathway invites dogs on a leash, bikes and pedestrians to share the space exploring the lower reaches of the Kaiapoi River.

Visit Kaiapoi Island

Kaiapoi Island is a local favourite with dog walkers (leash) and for sports fishing. In season known for whitebaiting. The entrance to Kaiapoi Island is next to the Challenge service station at the corner of Wrights Road and State Highway one. Gates are open 4.30am to 7pm in winter and 4.30am to 10pm during daylight saving. Pedestrian access is available 24 hours. The stopbank walk passes the Poynter Nature Reserve, a small remnant forest surrounded by willow trees. The walking track through the reserve is no longer open as it has subsided into wetland since the 2011 earthquake.

River Queen started her life in Marlborough on the Taylor river close to the township of Blenheim where it operated for approximately a decade. She is a flat bottomed 2 story boat constructed of wood and fiberglass that is powered by 2 carefully hidden outboard motors. It has been fully refurbished since its arrival in Kaiapoi in October 2018 with paint, upholstery, carpets, new decks, new 115 Honda outboard motors and is ready to serve the Kaiapoi and wider areas.

The Kaiapoi River Queens flat bottom allows her to sail no matter the tide. Its permanent berth is just to the Eastern side of the Williams Street bridge and in front of the Paris for the Weekend Cafe on a purpose built floating jetty, that allows easy access for customers.
