Hunua Waterfall

Immensely satisfying Hunua waterfall is a very popular waterfall to visit due to its easy to reach location and the wealth of attractions nearby Hunua Ranges Regional Park.

  • Firm 800 metre trail to the falls lookout platforms.
  • The track ascends from the Wairoa River through native forest and loops back to the base of the Hunua falls
  • Hunua falls, swimming park rangers strongly advise visitors NOT to swim in the falls due to hazards
  • Clear signage directing visitors where to go when you enter the park’s driveway

How to access Hunua Ranges Regional Park

  • Pedestrian access – Open 24 hours
  • Vehicle access – An automatic gate is located at the park entrance. No access after closing hours. It will open at any time for vehicles exiting the park.
  • Gate access summer – 6am to 9pm (Daylight saving)
  • Gate access winter – 6am to 7pm (Non-daylight saving)

Hunua Regional Park walking trails

  • Short walks among dense sub-tropical forests or hike to ridge lines for outstanding views of Auckland the Firth of Thames
  • Original bush is home to a wide variety of native flora and fauna
  • Look out for New Zealand ancient forest giants, the native kauri with its straight truck towering among the surrounding bush
  • Check out the Wairoa Dam with its picnic tables inviting visitors to relax
  • Cossey-Massey Loop: 8.3 km (3 hours) steep climbs in part
  • Wairoa Loop Track: 6.2 km (3 hours) lookout platform overlooking the Wairoa Reservoir
  • Suspension bridge loop: 3.9 km ( 1 ½ hours) is part of the Wairoa Cossey Track

Free BBQ gas facilities at Upper Mangatāwhiri. Please do not bring your own solid fuel BBQs due to the fire risk of disposing of the hot embers. This includes but is not limited to wood fire, coal and pellet BBQs. No open fires permitted.

Hunua Ranges Regional Park allows campings with eight camping grounds throughout the park. Check the online resource and the brochure in the travel pack section for booking details.

Staying overnight in selected car parks Certified Self-Containment (CRC) campervans, vehicle units and campervans can stay overnight for a maximum of two nights at Hunua Falls overnight parking area and Upper Mangatawhiri overnight parking area. Conditions apply.
