KAWATIRI COASTAL TRAIL – ATTRACTIONS

The brainchild of the Buller Cycling Club, the coastal trail is stunning. The walk starts at the Buller River bridge, passes into town with its cafes for a coffee fix then quickly moves onto tidal estuaries, river views, coastal landscapes and plaques describing wildlife and human activity. The tracks are well constructed with fine gravel, compacted to provide a firm foundation. In sections there are boardwalks over the wetlands giving visitors a close up view of estuary life.

  • Varied coastal landscapes, plants and animals
  • Wooden piles and wharfs with rusty nails — perfect for photographers
  • Extensive Māori and European history
  • Superb climate for all year use

TIP

A great thing to do is take time to explore the short side tracks to the Buller River. The port is located near the mouth of the Buller River, Westport is the main commercial and administrative centre for the northern part of the West Coast.

The Kawatiri Coastal Trail needs donations to support its maintenance and ongoing operations. The Trust welcomes donations through its Givealittle Page to ensure this incredible community asset goes from good to great, giving enjoyment and health benefits to those who use it.  The trail has been impacted by the recent flooding of the Buller River.

KAWATIRI RIVER TRAIL – WESTPORT

Westport lies on the alluvial plain of the mighty Buller River and the evidence of the power of the river in full flood is graphically illustrated with information plaques along the riverside walk. Walk to the edge of the seawalls and watch the river battling its way into the ocean. The submerged sand spits created by the release of energy are a constant threat to shipping. The harbour loop offers stunning photo moments of the town, river and surrounding mountains.
