Ngarunui (Ocean) Beach, with its smaller, beginner-friendly waves. Raglan’s surf school is here and Ngarunui is patrolled by lifeguards, the safest of the surf beaches for a family swim.

Beach access is a steep wide path where the surfer, the family and the tourist all walk towards the black iron sands and curved crescent of the beach. This is a beach encouraging beach strolls and picnics. Ngarunui is the perfect beach for novice surfers.

The beach is safe and well patrolled by local life saving guards in the high summer season. If you have your interest sparked by the challenge of surfing there are a number of reputable surf schools in Raglan; some of these are based around Ngarunui, while others tend to be centred around the beaches that are favourite of the school’s coaches.

Toilets are located in the upper car park which means a short steep hike to the car parks. There are no shops or cafes however in the peak summer season food trucks will park in the car parks. Recommended: Bring water and snacks with you.
