The National Library of New Zealand is where an original copy of the Treaty of Waitangi is stored. The Treaty is the defining constitutional document for New Zealand governance. See the original Treaty of Waitangi up-close at the National Library of New Zealand’s permanent exhibition, He Tohu. Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Treaty of Waitangi, is the agreement that Aotearoa New Zealand is built on and was first signed at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands on 6 February 1840. As well as an opportunity to view the treaty, He Tohu is an interactive, hands-on exhibition that gives historical insight into the treaty and its implications in Aotearoa New Zealand since its signing.
