Waipapa-a-Iwi Mōhaka Marae (Maori architectural gem)
Mohaka is a detour (approximately 5 km) from State Highway 2. The historic settlement is home to, “Waipapa a Iwi marae in Mōhaka is distinguished by its historic round meeting house, Rongomaiwahine. The origins of this meeting house are unclear” source Rongomaiwahine, about 1910 – Hawke’s Bay region – Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand. The marae (meeting place) was completed in 1885 of pit sawn timber with an entrance way flanked with two very large whale jawbones.
