WAIPOUA FOREST: TWILIGHT ENCOUNTER – MAORI CULTURAL ECO NIGHT TOUR

Join a guided twilight tour and hear about the connections local Maori feel towards the forest and the deep affinity with the kauri sentinels who have witnessed the passing of the centuries. Your guide will share thoughts about responsibility and conservation practices to protect the kauri, stories and legends before reciting traditional greeting chants for Tane Mahuta, one of the oldest known kauri trees in New Zealand. Tane Mahuta, Waipoua Forest provides great exploration opportunities for lovers of the outdoors. The tree is believed to be more than 2,000 years old and is still growing today with a diameter of 4.4 metres and stretching up nearly 18 metres to the first branch.

Self-guided walks

There are several short walks, including to the Lord of the Forest’ the Tane Mahuta.The forest is filled with ancient, towering trees. The forest can be explored on your own during the day – just be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes – or at night with the help of an experienced guide on an organised tour. Some trails might be closed to the threat of kauri dieback disease.
