GERALDINE TO CHRISTCHURCH
For visitors wishing to return to Christchurch state highway 1 is easily accessible from Geraldine
ASHBURTON
As you join one of the busiest roads in Aotearoa New Zealand the major highway bypasses Ashburton. Swing by Ashburton, make the detour and explore the town.
Ashburton sits between two major rivers, so fly-fishing is the local obsession. While Rakaia (SH 1) has an enormous trout as a village emblem Ashburton had a dedicated fishing fraternity focused on salmon and sea-run trout. If you’re a museum fan, Ashburton has an extraordinary number for a town of less than 28,000 residents. There are six museums, including a vintage railway museum, aviation museum, fire museum and car museum. There are also plenty of local art and craft galleries to browse. For crafty fans Ashburton’s Ashford Village is a compulsory stop for its fibres, looms and weaving materials. Ashburton is a cultural centre with a well recognised art gallery and several museums focused on the transportation sector from aviation to vintage trains. The town has gardens and parks to linger in and shoppers can experience high street shopping in a rural setting.
