Ashburton sits between two major rivers, so fly-fishing is the local obsession. While Rakaia (SH 1) has an enormous trout as a village emblem Ashburton had a dedicated fishing fraternity focused on salmon and sea-run trout. Ashburton is a cultural centre with a well recognised art gallery and several museums focused on the transportation sector from aviation to vintage trains.
