Canterbury inland scenic route: Christchurch to Lake Tekapo

Beginnings

Avon River, Christchurch @Michal Klajban Avon River, Christchurch @Michal Klajban

Christchurch is a natural gateway to inland Canterbury. The scenic route is a chequerboard of wheat and pasture threaded together tall corridors of trees providing weather shelter belts. From the Christchurch commuter suburb of Rolleston you swing off the major highway onto state highway 77. You are now in the Selwyn district, “From mountains to the sea.”

Your journey will delve into the heart of the South Island where the Southern Alps frame the landscape. For the adventurous visitor there are thrills and spills aplenty. For slow lane explorers intent on savouring the moment there are quiet corners, foodie treats and heritage galore. Families can enjoy finding quirky fairy doors for kids or walk among cool fern-filled path in the Alford Forest Park.
