Heatherbell Hotel

@Phil Braithwaite

Location

SH 7, Totara Flat

Heatherbell Hotel (circa 1860) represents the changing history of the area. Mid 19th century dirt roads, poor infrastructure and the influx of miners led to stopping points on journeys. Between Greymouth and Reefton Totara Point was an ideal location as it was relatively flat. The historic hotel was also a post office and the enterprising owner of many years, William Young established a bakery behind the hotel. The building is category II, with a registered archeological site in the vicinity of the hotel. The hotel has been closed for a number of years.

Slow down on State Highway 7 and reflect on the local pub and its history.
