Ocean Beach is attractive with its wide sweeping curved bay and fine sandy foreshore. The beach is top local favourite due to its sand, parking, public toilets and surf lifeguards on duty during the summer months. Access to the beach is via a narrow road passing over private land. Freedom camping is prohibited as is vehicle access to the foreshore.
NOTE
Behind the dunes, Haupouri Flats, is farmland divided by Waipuka stream which sometimes forms a temporary lagoon. The lagoon often has very poor water quality. Ocean Beach is safe when the surf is small. When the surf is swelling over 1 metre there is a strong undercurrent. Care is needed. Vehicles are effectively banned from the beach due to continual irresponsible behaviour and damage to the fragile sand dunes.
