Overlooking Russell is the hill where chief Hone Heke chopped down the British flagpole four times. Civil disobedience and a powerful statement Heke definitely understood political nuances. You can walk up to Flagstaff from Russell (you can drive to the viewpoint as well), the views of the Bay of Islands are magnificent.
