Otatara Pa Historic Reserve

Taradale, New Zealand

Discover one of New Zealand’s largest archeological sites. The Otatara Pa Historic Reserve was a very large pa (fortified village) in New Zealand. The site is well documented with plaques describing the remains of terraces, dwelling sites and food storage pits. The pa complex with its strategic defensive position offers visitors stunning views of Hawke’s Bay’s plains. Your visit can be self guided or join a 2-hour tour with Napier Maori Tours.

The actual physical evidence of occupation is barely discernible. The loop walk across grassy embankments has detailed information plaques describing what was in position prior and provides visitors terrific views of the surrounding area. The entrance is where the wooden palisades, carved memorial posts and signage bring the site to life.
