Whakatane Heads is memorable as you watch boats navigate through a treacherous rocky gap where the river nears the sea. Gigantic ocean swells compete with the tidal river with turbulent water that is difficult to navigate. The riverbank walk is busy with locals walking their dogs, cyclists, joggers enjoying the outdoors. The Whakatane river port is a hive of small boats.
TIP
The Heads is a great spot to watch the sunset over the Rangitaiki Plains.
