The Dowse Art Museum is a premier contemporary art gallery in Lower Hutt. The Dowse specialises in contemporary visual art, fashion, jewellery, multimedia and ceramics. This museum is a favourite of mine due to the inclusive programme for younger patrons. With a dedicated children’s space, complete with colouring supplies, a puppet show and books young minds are encouraged to enjoy the art experience.
The Dowse is home to Nuku Tewhatewha, a nationally significant pātaka (Māori store house, usually for food) which was built in 1856. Beautifully carved, the storehouse is a symbolic link to the history of Māori settlement in Aotearoa / New Zealand.
