A must-go destination for heritage buffs and lovers of historic gardens. Albertons is an unmissable Auckland, New Zealand attraction telling the story of New Zealand settlement in the 19th century.

The historic Mt Albert Alberton farmhouse gradually shed its utilitarian origins becoming a turreted mansion. Beautiful verandahs, ornate wood work offers visitors a chance to delve into the lives of freshly minted New Zealanders in the 19th century.

Find out where the servants slept, in the attic up narrow steep stairs or the regal splendour of a lace covered bedroom with the luxury of a bathroom nearby. Look closely at the faded wallpaper is original adding a palpable sense of history to the master bedroom. And imagine the effort taken to hand craft the lace bed hangings.

Explore the kitchen with large coal range and functional arrangements in contrast to the glamour of the dining room and its array of fine china and crystal glass ware.

The washhouse and dairy is fascinating as its very functional role is testament to the hard labour required to manage a 19th century farm and orchard. There is the original well (originally over 12 metres depth). An enormous copper for boiling sheets and other clothes and a luxury, an early washing machine. Opposite are traditional clothing scrubbing boards. Look out for the butter stamps as the house cow was an important part of the livestock producing butter and milk for the farmhouse occupants.

Over 9,000 items are in the care of Alberton with over 7,000 objects associated with the Taylor family. The memorabilia is treasure trove of domestic life, farm activities and social events is a visual record. Visitors are requested to ensure the safety of objects during their self-guided tour.
