NOTORIOUS KAIPARA HARBOUR

  • Kaipara Harbour, second largest in New Zealand with a notorious bar across the Dargaville River mouth. There are accounts of over 110 shipwrecks.
  • By area the largest harbour in the world
  • Kauri forests floated to their death on the Kaipara Harbour
  • Backwater of estuaries, mudflats and swirling swift currents

Strong brown swift flowing rivers, Northern Wairoa, Otamatea, Oruawharo, Tauhoa channel and Kaipara rich in sediment create estuarine worlds in the Kaipara.

The rivers are beautiful in their dense, opaque ‘don’t mess with me’ appearance. Peer down into the depths and wonder about the stories the rivers, the harbour could tell.
