The Indoor Rockwall is an all-weather adventure climbing wall suitable for all ages and climbing abilities. Standing 12 metres high the climbing wall is a way to explore the inner climber in you. It is challenging in a safe environment where skilled guides support you every step of the way.
- Harnesses and climbing shoes available to hire. Please note you must bring a belayer to climb.
- For climbers aged 12 years and under, parents must stay onsite for the duration of the child’s visit.
- For climbers aged 13-15 years of age, parents must stay onsite until the child is deemed competent to climb.
An ideal day out for urban kids entranced with farm animals. There is a wide assortment of animals from donkeys, ponies, emus, goats, sheep, deer, llamas, alpacas, pigs, feathered animals, ducks, chickens, parrots and turtles. The playground, picnic areas and ride on kids equipment means there is a variety of activities to engage children’s attention. Lilliput Farm Taupo offers hand feeding opportunities and baby animals to watch. There are even cuddling options with rabbits and guinea pigs in a quiet room to gain kids confidence with animals. It’s quirky holiday fun, it does not cost the earth the Taupo Lakeland Lions – Home Lions Express train rides the monorail in the Taupo town centre. Combine with one of the family friendly cafes for a day exploring the town centre. This attraction is largely running during the school holidays. Check before promising the kids a ride. The ride operates in the Tongariro Domain.

Take the kids, family and friends to the highest place in the North Island for afternoon tea, lunch or a snack. The Sky Waka Gondola launches visitors over the alpine tussock to the scree and snowy surrounds of Whakapapa ski field. It’s a year round attraction worth the drive to get a bird’s eye view of Mt Ruapehu and the Tongariro National Park.
A purpose-built mountain bike park with over 50km of trails for all levels. Craters Mountain Bike Park has around 50km of bike trails to suit all abilities. There are plenty of options to choose from, allowing you to escape for just an hour or two or have a full day on the trails. All trails run in and out of exotic pine and eucalyptus plantations, with some stunning views of Lake Taupo and the Waikato River. The volcanic pumice soils allow for year round riding with free draining qualities that are not found anywhere else in New Zealand.

The local museum delves into the heritage of the local iwi (tribe) Ngati Tuwharetoa with the highlight a 15metre waka (canoe) carved from a single massive totara log. The museum brings art to life with an interactive app making art appealing to kids. The truly earth shaking Ōruanui volcano eruption 25,000 years ago is innovatively explained. Lake Taupo is the evidence of this massive earth displacement. Lake Taupo is a crater lake, a definite wow moment for kids to comprehend the scale of the eruption. The Museum has an ever-changing selection of inventively curated exhibitions and a shop – He Taonga Iti – that sells prints and souvenirs of locally made artisan pieces.
