SAMUELS ROSE GARDEN, BROADGREEN HOUSE, NELSON
Outstanding collection of heritage roses in Samuels Rose Garden. There is an annual Among the Roses event where the community enjoys music, performances, markets and free guided tours of the house and garden. The Rose Walk is a fantastic way to discover some gems amongst this wonderful collection.
Samuels Rose Garden, established 1968 has 560 named varieties. The rose garden is a homage to the desire of English settlers to reproduce the gardens they had left behind. The gardens are named after Mr S J Samuels, a rose nurseryman, who donated both the rose stock and bud wood and undertook the budding assisted by his wife.
Over the years the Nelson Rose Society has added new cultivars to the collection, and Council continues to upgrade the rose stock as part of its continued management of this asset. A catalogue listing current plantings of rose varieties in the garden can be purchased at a small cost at Broadgreen Historic House.
