Eves Valley Scenic Reserve is a treasure. Visitors will enjoy a native beech podocarp forest, easy walking trails and picnic spots. Within 20 minutes drive from Nelson city is a touch of lowland forest which formerly covered the Nelson region. The 28 hectare reserve is a rare example of native forest with mature stands of totara, matai, kahikatea and rimu interspersed with beech trees.
Expect to hear bird song, the slow beat of the New Zealand wood pigeon, the kereu. Look out for tui and bellbirds.
EVES RESERVE LOOP TRAIL
Enjoy stream crossings (bridges and boardwalks) through the native forest. The conservation in action easy 1.6 km loop track heads through the reserve, crossing Eves Valley Stream several times. The grassed area adjacent to the road and forest glades on the fringe of the bush provide good picnic spots. There are compostable toilets at this location.

Eves Valley is off Waimea West Road, 27 km from Nelson. Nearby is the small settlement of Brightwater with its two distinctive heritage churches.
Interesting fact
Ernest Rutherford, noble prize winning scientist was born in Brightwater expect to see a memorial to the famous citizen as you enter the town.
