MOHAKA MARAE Waipapa-a-Iwi Mōhaka Marae (Maori architectural gem).
Mohaka is a detour (approximately 5 km) from State Highway 2. The historic settlement is home to, “Waipapa a Iwi marae in Mōhaka is distinguished by its historic round meeting house, Rongomaiwahine. The origins of this meeting house are unclear” source Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand. The marae (meeting place) was completed in 1885 of pit sawn timber with an entrance way flanked with two very large whale jawbones. The marae is private property view only from the public township road.
