- MILITARY SERVICE
- THE ULTIMATE PRICE
The East Cape Marae’s are places where the military actions of soldiers are honoured with elaborate carvings and the story of heroism. Look for these somber reminders of war and reflect on what these soldiers fought for.
One of the heroes of World War II is Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, who died 1943 and is now acknowledged throughout the district. He was ‘one of many young men who laid down their lives for the defence of their country. Date of action: 26 Mar 1943 (Tebaga Gap, Tunisia); Date of award: 4 Jun 1943 (posthumous award) Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu was the first Maori soldier to win the VC.’ Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, 1943
What do you think about “Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu”?
Honoring the 25th Maori Battalion. All rest in peace.
I think of the 8 members of our family who lost their lives in WW1. The oldest being 27 the youngest 18. All those young men sacrificed for what. All those young Maori boys the future leaders of maoridom gone forever.
Respect for all the brave warriors. I had a privilege to fight alongside the Maori Battalion for 3 yrs from North Africa to Italy.
