Lonely Bay beach

Coromandel, North Island

The beach is accessible from the Shakespeare Cliff Reserve (there is a car park) where the track starts. There are lots of steps to the secluded beach. The location is popular for wedding photos with Shakespeare Cliffs, white sands, picturesque limestone boulders and mature trees creating a memorable backdrop.

Maramaratotara Track/Whitianga Rock (1-hour Loop)

Shakespeare Cliff headland is one of the Coromandel’s photogenic locations for landscape views. The cliffs are a good picnic location with pohutukawa groves, public toilets and plaques detailing the history of the area. To get to Shakespeare Cliff you can walk the Lookout Rd from Flaxmill Bay and from the reserve, (which is horseshoe shaped) walk down a steep track to Lonely Bay. You’ll need to follow Lookout Rd back to Purangi Rd and either turn right for Flaxmill Bay or left to a track to Cooks Beach. The reserve at Shakespeare Cliff is mobility friendly, but the track down to Lonely Bay is not and requires a decent level of fitness. Allow 30 minutes return from Shakespeare Cliff to Lonely Bay.
