Tawhiti Museum Hawera is a private collector’s hobby now open to the public. The collection is interactive, entertaining and fun. Make sure you experience the indoor boat ride called Traders and Whalers. The ride is in twilight with backlit lanterns and diamoras of settler daily life, voices and canons giving visitors a glimpse of nineteenth century life.
This award winning, privately owned museum is home to 1,000s of super-realistic scale models and life-size displays that bring to life much of the area’s history. Visitors are invited into the workshops to view how the displays are designed and built on the premises making the museum experience personal. Visitors are engaged and inspired by Nigel Ogle’s artistic interpretation of how a museum narrates their story. The gift shop is largely marketing merchandise from the Tawhiti Mill Pottery.
