The East Cape Marae’s are places where the military actions of soldiers are honoured with elaborate carvings and the story of heroism.

Elaborately carved tribute to soldiers such as Ngarimu

Look for these somber reminders of war and reflect on what these soldiers fought for. One of the heroes of World War II is  Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, who died 1943 and is now acknowledged throughout the district. He was ‘one of many young men who laid down their lives for the defence of their country.

Date of action: 26 Mar 1943 (Tebaga Gap, Tunisia); Date of award: 4 Jun 1943 (posthumous award) Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu was the first Maori soldier to win the VC.’ Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, 1943.
