TIP

Photographers, look out for the landmark Sky City Tower in central Auckland, visible against the skyline.

Omana Regional Park is part of a string of Auckland City Council parks offering volunteer programes, seashore education programmes, and introduction to farm animal encounters.

And the best bit – plenty of shady pohutukawa trees for summer magic at the park.

The playground has climbing art challenges, carved whare (traditional Maori house) to clamber in and out of, four carved pou (posts) reflecting land ties to local iwi (tribe).

Look for signage and description of the defensive Maori pa site (fortified village). O-Manawatere pa, a small rectangular area on the cliff edge has a defensive outer ridge ditch. The park’s varied history was the place for a early mission station, one of the region’s first farms, was dug for kauri gum and prospected for gold and silver before it was acquired by the Auckland City Council for the purposes of public use in 1970.
