Urupukapuka Island, Urupukapuka Island is the largest island in the Bay of Islands of New Zealand, located about 7.3 km from Paihia. The idea of Project Island Song is to return bird song to islands where it was silent. Note by note the birds are returning.
Project Island Song is the Bay of Islands’ wildlife sanctuary. The seven main islands in the eastern Bay of Islands have been pest mammal free since 2009, and the natural ecosystems are being restored.
Walk among regenerating native bush and trees, take in stunning sea views. Listen to the birdsong and spot reintroduced tieke (saddleback), toutouwai (North Island robin), pōpokatea (whitehead) pāteke (brown teal). There are seven islands of Ipipiri – Eastern Bay of Islands.
Spend time in the conservation centre understanding the progress that has been made. Contact Project Island Song and contribute your time on the island. Explore the island, picnic, walk among heritage sites and listen to the bird song.
