Highlights of the day
The high passes of the Napier Taupo highway have hidden delights from a subalpine arboretum with its mature trees and rhododendrons to waterfalls a short easy walk from the car park. The sweeping road was a feat in construction giving Napier a vital overland link to the central North Island. The Opepe Reserve, just before the entrance to Taupo is a relic of the NZ Land Wars with its colonial cemetery and the relics of the nineteenth century sawmilling which saw the destruction of ancient forests. The road is a story of NZ’s growth in the twentieth century as well as a reflection on the past. The road follows, in part, traditional Maori routes.
