Best bits, your only guide to a grea holiday

Unearth the jewel in the Bay of Islands and find out about Russell. You will discover a pretty town facing the harbour. The town now thrives on visitors and is a magnet for people visiting Northland and nearby Waitangi. However if buildings could talk you would hear chatter about the ‘Hell Hole of the Pacific,’ the problem of prostitution, drunken sailors and escaped convicts who lived in the lawless society of early Kororareka. The Place of Sweet Penguins in the early 1800’s. Whaling was the reason for the rapid growth of the settlement with up to 34 ships riding at anchor in the safe harbour at any given time. Walk into the past and enjoy the intact original street plan and names from 1843. Many of the buildings seen in Russell reflect this time period and the building’s story is fascinating.
