From Glacier country the route takes you through the mountain pass from the West Coast to Otago on the Haast Pass. Haast was originally a road workers camp and settlement now it flourishes on tourism. There is a Department of Conservation Visitor Information Centre to support visitor queries about the attractions and activities in the area. The focus of Haast attractions is the outdoors and nature with jet boating, helicopter flights, hunting, fishing, glaciers, bushwalks and extented multiple day tramps. Haast is located inin the heart of Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Area. There are national parks to the north, south and east. The Haast region is so spectacular UNESCO awarded it the status of being a “World Heritage ” area.

Fiordland National Park

Te Wāhipounamu (Māori for “the place of greenstone”) is in the south west corner of the South Island of New Zealand.

Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1990 and covering 26,000 km², the site incorporates four national parks:

  • Aoraki / Mount Cook
  • Fiordland
  • Mt Aspiring
  • Westland

The four parks have areas of original flora and fauna of Gondwana, one of the reasons for its listing as a World Heritage site
