Huia is where the Huia Museum – Huia Settlers Museum is situated at the heart of Huia in the Karamatura Valley. with its back drop of rugged bush clad hills and steep rocky bluffs. The Museum was established to collect, preserve and display items to represent the way of life of the early settlers of the Huia and surrounding districts of the Waitakere Ranges and Manulau shoreline.The museum is funded and managed by volunteers. Open Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays, 1:30pm – 4:30pm Summer hours 1:30pm – 4pm, Winter hours, or by arrangement.
The Huia Foodstore is a genuine rural shop with almost everything on its shelves. The local Huia Reserve on the side of Huia Bay where there are picnic tables, a playground and BBQ facilities plus a launching ramp for kayaking. A Lower Huia Dam walkway is an easy two hour walk through bush to one of Auckland’s water supply systems. The walk includes a waterfall, a swing bridge and great views. Again check with visitor information if tracks are open.
