Discover a picturesque beach with jagged headlands creating dramatic scenery. Kairakau Beach is a sandy beach popular for swimming and fishing. The dunes are fenced and there are designated boardwalks and steps to protect the fragile sand dunes. Kairakau lagoon at the Mangakuri River mouth is a popular point for water bombing, however check water quality especially in warm summer months. There is a permanent community of residents as well as a well known campground and general store. There are no lifeguards on duty. At low tide consider walking along the beach to ‘waterfall bay’. There are several unofficial grass tracks to streams and swimming holes. In summer there is a fishing competition for surfcasting buffs.
