Hagley Park is a natural sanctuary of 407 acres since it was established in the 1850’s. Blending seamlessly with the outstanding Christchurch Botanic Gardens visitors can immerse themselves in woodland walks while nearby cafes, shops, galleries and museums offer the delights of a large city.

Hagley Park comprises North and South Hagley Park which are separated by Riccarton Avenue and bordered by Deans, Hagley, Rolleston and Harper Avenues.

Walking and Cycling in Hagley Park, Christchurch

Hagley Park has an extensive network of shared pathways. Amble along the Avon River in spring with naturalised bluebells carpeting the woodlands. Toss bundles of flame coloured autumn leaves at friends. There are a number of tracks linking North & South Hagley Park with the Botanic Gardens at the heart.

A popular track is the perimeter path of North Hagley which passes a golf course and the Avon River in Little Hagley. The perimeter track is 4 km in length. There is a 17-station fitness course. South Hagley features numerous exercise facilities, and the Hagley Oval.

South Hagley walk Christchurch – autumn colour

Length 3.5 km

Starting from the Hagley Oval car park on Riccarton Avenue, follow the path northwest towards the Riccarton Road traffic lights and its group of mature oaks and elms. Turn south along Deans Avenue, a good choice if looking for autumn colour, and on to Moorhouse Avenue where spring daffodils flower en masse under deciduous European trees. Continue around to Hospital Corner and back to the car park.

Millbrook Reserve walk

Millbrook Reserve, officially opened in 1924, is a hidden treasure trove of native and formal gardens situated just over the river from Little Hagley Park.

Toilets: Located in several places including the Armagh Street car park and next to the Botanic Gardens Woodland Bridge.

Unmissable is a punt on the Avon River. Pass the beautiful Christchurch Botanic Gardens on an irresistibly romantic slow river journey with your Edwardian clad punter.
