The Museum of Contemporary Art Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is a building glimmering in the light with stainless steel curves that encourage visitors to enter. The building itself is a contemporary art statement. The building is dedicated to the renowned sculptor Len Lye, a pioneer filmmaker and kinetic sculptor Len Lye.

Sculpture that talks, has sound and interacts with its audience is magical and here in New Plymouth is a homage to this art form. And there is a gift shop that will devour your time as you absorb the sound of movement. Either way the building is a wow moment and an extraordinary place for photographers to capture its essence.

The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is New Zealand’s contemporary art museum and home to the The Len Lye Centre – New Zealand’s first institution dedicated to a single artist, the pioneering filmmaker and kinetic sculptor, Len Lye.

If contemporary, edgy art is what you look for then Len Lye is the place to go. The Govett Brewster gallery, open since 1970 showcases artists whose works follows or practices Len Lye style.

The boutique 60-seat cinema screens international film festivals, experimental, arthouse and cult movies, as well as a New Zealand cinema, symposia and lectures.

Govett-Brewster Shop where you can find unique gifts of books, stationery, homewares, jewellery and interesting puzzles for kids.

Parts of the building are closed at certain times of the year to enable the changeover of exhibitions. These times are around Mar/Apr, Jul/Aug and Nov/Dec. MONICA’S EATERY

The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery / Len Lye Centre has a cafe acknowledging the work of Monica Brewster and her contribution to the establishment of the Len Lye Centre.

Monica’s Eatery, adjacent to the Govett-Brewster, is an international art cafe inspired by the life and spirit of Monica Brewster, a globetrotter even before the golden age of air travel and founding patron of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery.

Open 7 days for breakfast, lunch and drinks.

Admission to the gallery is free for locals (ID will be requested) otherwise fees apply. Open seven days, 10am – 5pm (+ Thursday night films), the entrance to the art gallery is on Queen St.
