Get stuck into the Timber Trail and get away from the crowds in the quiet Central North Island. A favorite among adventure cyclists, this mountain biking trail passes through magnificent old podocarp forests, offering challenging terrain and plenty of thrills. With shuttle service and bike hire, you can focus on the riding – and not on the logistics of your trip.
The Timber Trail was created out of the remains of the old logging tracks and tramways used to move around timber from huge native podocarp trees. The wilderness you will ride through still contains many surviving mature trees plus regenerating forest.
Purpose-built bridges cross a multitude of streams and rivers, including 8 spectacular suspension bridges (the longest is 141m!). You will also get to negotiate the amazing Ongarue Spiral – a circle of track formed from bridges, a cutting and a curved tunnel. It originally allowed the timber trams to quickly climb or descend the region’s rugged terrain.
TIP

Whilst this trail is classified as a Grade 2/3 (Easy/Intermediate), it is still a long ride and once on trail there are no escape routes or reliable coverage. If you are new to cycling or not as fit as you could be you need to be prepared for a long day. The average time to do each section of the ride is around 5 hours (with lots of stops), but some groups have taken up to 8 hours. Ensure you bring enough water and food to last the day, and have suitable gear for biking in hot and freezing weather conditions.
