Christ Church

Russell, Northland

Another building to admire is Christ Church, the oldest existing church in New Zealand. Look carefully at the outside walls for the musket ball holes from the 1845 Battle of Kororāreka, New Zealand Land Wars. The church is set in a pretty 19th century styled garden. The graveyard’s biggest memorial commemorates Tamati Waka Nene, a powerful Ngāpuhi chief from the Hokianga who sided against Hone Heke in the Northland War
