Melbourne Zoo wildlife is a natural drawcard for visitors. Convenient, accessible viewing of unique Australian wildlife & Africa’s big five means over 2.25 million visitors flock to the zoo, Healesville Sanctuary and Werribee Open Range Zoo. (source Wikipedia)

Zoos Victoria manages Healesville Sanctuary, a specialist in Australian wildlife. Melbourne Zoo is very easy to visit from city hotels with its classic contemporary zoo vibe. Werribee Open Range Zoo is a touch of the African savannah.

  • Accessible via Royal Park Railway Station on the Upfield Line

Melbourne Zoo is surrounded by extensive flower gardens with picnic tables, toilets and wheelchair accessible areas. The popular bioclimatic zones are the Gorilla Rainforest, Australian Bush, Great Flight Aviary, Australian Wild Seas, Lion Gorge, World of Frogs and Reptile House. The Main Trail has a variety of favourites from giraffes, platypus and red panda.

There are boardwalks, elevated platforms and very large enclosures creating a sense of the natural world the animals inhabit. There are several daily tours organised by keepers to educate visitors on endangered species. Every ticket sold contributes to the flight against wildlife extinction.

Melbourne Zoo is open throughout the year from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

Can I bring my own food or picnic to the zoo?

You are also most welcome to BYO picnic to the zoo. If you need to pop out to your car to get your picnic at lunchtime, make sure you let our friendly gate staff know so they can let you back into the zoo as your ticket will not work once it has been scanned

There are six cafes dotted around the Melbourne Zoo affording visitors stunning views of the nearby animals.
