Macedon Regional Park - A Hop, Skip and Jump from Melbourne

Relish the cool climate of the Macedon Ranges as you escape from the heat of a Melbourne summer. The native forest ridges of the Macedon Ranges are part of a 2,379 hectare park. The Macedon Regional Park is wrapped around Mt Macedon, the highest peak. The extinct volcanic Mt Macedon is 1,010 metres above sea level.

  • Birding. The steep and dense forests are home to thriving communities of wrens and yellow robins while crimson rosellas, king parrots and gang gang cockatoos are often found in the park’s picnic areas and open spaces
  • Wildlife spotting, koalas, kangaroos and echidnas (check Travel Pack Section for a guide to the flora and fauna found in the park)
  • Mountain bike cycle trails (check Travel Pack Section for cycle map)
  • Walk or hike to viewing platforms at Camels Hump, Major Mitchell lookout and Memorial Cairns (check Travel Pack Section for walking trails) 
  • BBQ facilities at Sanatorium Lake
  • Autumn leaves are a burst of colour in the surrounding towns and botanic gardens

Parks in Macedon Ranges

Macedon Regional Park #mustdo is a short exhilarating, energetic walk to Camels Hump. The Camels Hump is the second highest point in the range offering great views of Hanging Rock

 

You can also bring your dog, as dogs are permitted on a lead.

Check the park map in the Travel Pack Section for the location of the six picnic areas. The Harbison Picnic Ground has complimentary BBQ, shelters and toilets.

Days Picnic Ground has great space for both small and larger groups while historical Sanatorium Picnic Ground offers an ideal location to enjoy a stroll around the well maintained shady Sanatorium Lake Eco Trail. A great family day out in the Victorian bush.
