Cape Otway Lighthouse is a must see place due to its importance in maritime history and the sheer splendour of the location on the Great Ocean Road.
Heritage buildings include a restored Telegraph Station, 1859. A subsea cable linked the mainland to Tasmania. The Telegraph Station is now a museum and ethnographic collection narrating the story of past Lightkeepers.
The Assistant Lightkeepers 1856 cottage is now a cafe displaying ships that have been wrecked or frequented the coastal routes. The 1942 radar bunker had up to 50 personnel stationed at the lighthouse to protect the coast from enemy mines.

Cape Otway Lighthouse is part of Great Otway National Park. Access is well signposted on the Great Ocean Road, the road is sealed. There is pedestrian traffic only on a firm wide path to the lighthouse.
While there are admission fees there is the option of simply gazing at the landscape and perhaps a coffee at the onsite cafe. Lighthouses are always guaranteed to be in the best spot for a view.
Remember to layer up as it can be chilly even on a hot summer day. Make sure you have layers for the exposed position.
